optical illusion :: "reverse mindwarp"

why dots on a checkerboard make it look warped :: "The spots I placed them at cause us to see the pattern as being warped inward because our eyes/brains pick them up as visual cues. We can't help but "connect the dots", which lead inward toward the center, and that skews our perception of the reality of the parallel pattern." :: click below to watch

the science behind a tear-jerking song

in the wsj, michaeleen doucleff examines what makes adele's song so effective ::

"Twenty years ago, the British psychologist John Sloboda conducted a simple experiment. He asked music lovers to identify passages of songs that reliably set off a physical reaction, such as tears or goose bumps. Participants identified 20 tear-triggering passages, and when Dr. Sloboda analyzed their properties, a trend emerged: 18 contained a musical device called an "appoggiatura."

An appoggiatura is a type of ornamental note that clashes with the melody just enough to create a dissonant sound. "This generates tension in the listener," said Martin Guhn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia who co-wrote a 2007 study on the subject. "When the notes return to the anticipated melody, the tension resolves, and it feels good.""

"to my old master"

an extraordinary letter written from Jourdan Anderson to his old master, Colonel P.H. Anderson of Big Spring, Tennessee after the Colonel had requested Anderson come back to work on his farm :: read the whole letter here :: http://www.lettersofnote.com/2012/01/to-my-old-master.html

"Sir: I got your letter, and was glad to find that you had not forgotten Jourdon, and that you wanted me to come back and live with you again, promising to do better for me than anybody else can. I have often felt uneasy about you. I thought the Yankees would have hung you long before this, for harboring Rebs they found at your house. I suppose they never heard about your going to Colonel Martin's to kill the Union soldier that was left by his company in their stable. Although you shot at me twice before I left you, I did not want to hear of your being hurt, and am glad you are still living. It would do me good to go back to the dear old home again, and see Miss Mary and Miss Martha and Allen, Esther, Green, and Lee. Give my love to them all, and tell them I hope we will meet in the better world, if not in this. I would have gone back to see you all when I was working in the Nashville Hospital, but one of the neighbors told me that Henry intended to shoot me if he ever got a chance."
