optical illusion :: "reverse mindwarp"

why dots on a checkerboard make it look warped :: "The spots I placed them at cause us to see the pattern as being warped inward because our eyes/brains pick them up as visual cues. We can't help but "connect the dots", which lead inward toward the center, and that skews our perception of the reality of the parallel pattern." :: click below to watch

I showed this to my girlfriend and she claims she can't see the warping. It's just a checkerboard with dots on it. Is it possible these optical illusions don't work on every brain?
