i looked at this again and realized he isn't removing pieces of the cube to use as pixels---he works the puzzle to produce exactly the configuration of pixels he wants for each section.
i found it pretty interesting before. now i'm astounded :). (also--he's sort of the sherlock holmes of the art world, imo. he found a life-application for his puzzle addiction; very wise :D)
