September 14: Sunrise?
Temperature: -72.3 C, -98.0 F
Windchill -88.3 C, -127 F
With sunrise under a week away, we are beginning to see a very bright horizon where the sun is, and (my favorite) a deep blue on the opposite horizon. _Mars and the last few stars are long gone, and we are anticipating the sun coming above the horizon to stay.
Today the weather was cold, reaching below -100F again. _With this cold air, extreme refraction effects of the atmosphere made it possible to glimpse the sun briefly this evening even though the sun is still 3.5 degrees below the horizon. _One person even claims he saw some green in it.
Over the weekend we also ran out of liquid helium, necessary to keep our receivers running. _So today I walked out to AST/RO in the morning to catch it when the last receiver started to warm up. _Fortunately, the dewar stayed cold for many more hours than we anticipated, so we could take data throughout the afternoon. _The dewar started to warm up in the evening, so before going to bed, I went back out to AST/RO to turn everything off. _On my way, I took over 65 pictures of sunrise.
