lukkucairi 04-27-2010 11:32 AM

it is all as I suspected... :p

Odbe 05-06-2010 07:18 AM

I think you all need to see this right now.

brightpearl 05-06-2010 02:37 PM

^that is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

I would like to announce that I am about to graduate, and that my stupid application was accepted. It's going to upheave our lives a bit, but I hope it will be good in the long run.

Frieda 05-06-2010 03:36 PM

^YAYYYYYY!! :) :) :)

Odbe 05-07-2010 12:36 AM

THE SUN IS SHINING!!!

Excuse my overexcitement, but it hasn't done so for weeks and weeks.

Must've been all those flapping towels that scared away the rainclouds... thanks, Pearly and Odbe ;)

lukkucairi 05-24-2010 12:12 PM

I am ready to go back to Utah now.

Odbe 05-25-2010 05:50 AM

International Towel Day
Uses of my towel today in order of occurrence:

1. napkin for eating dry instant noodles while on the run to and late for a morning lecture
2. mopping the sweat from my brow after running up stairs to said lecture
3. conversation starter
4. attempt to flag down passing space ship (unsuccessful)
5. umbrella and raincoat for an unfortunately timed field trip in the pouring rain
6. classmate: Oh damn, I'm getting mud all over my new shoes, I wish I had a towel or something
me: Aha! I have just the thing!

Frieda 05-27-2010 01:18 PM

2nd semifinal of the eurovision song contest tonight.. and we have the worst entry ever!!

lukkucairi 05-31-2010 09:54 AM

Tove Jansson once illustrated Lewis Carrol's Hunting of the Snark

:D

Brynn 06-01-2010 12:47 PM

It's going to rain all the week longer and longer and endless clouded over days with drizzle forever. The winter here is an eternity and spring just gray grumpy except for soggy roses.

YsaPur EsChomuw 06-01-2010 06:10 PM

Slovakia has inadvertently slunk into southern Asia on the map, having an unexpected period of summer monsoons with copious amounts of rain, starting from mid-January till godknowswhen.

Frieda 06-02-2010 05:44 PM

got some serious bruises from the asshole mammogram machine from hell with an attitude. ack.

brightpearl 06-04-2010 09:58 AM

It's free donut day at Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts.
:D

Marcus Bales 06-04-2010 12:05 PM

I'm eating a free donut.

brightpearl 06-04-2010 06:46 PM

I had one, too. :)

MoJoRiSin 06-04-2010 07:36 PM

a patient brough donuts to mo's workplace today

the synchroni city no?

xfox 06-04-2010 10:15 PM

On the way to the beach for a few days.

YsaPur EsChomuw 06-05-2010 01:02 AM

Ok, so they've started evacuating people in some city parts, closest to the river.
There are rumours about the dam... if it bursts 350 000 will be in for the dive. But it won't burst, right?

Frieda 06-05-2010 06:00 PM

^:(:(:(

so sorry, Ysa.. :(

stay safe.. get yourself something inflatable, stock up on canned food, chocolate, water, flashlight & meds.. i have a similar emergency pack in my storage room in case the NLs ever flood.. hopefully i'll never have to use any of it!

~~~good vibes to the dam.. be strong!~~~
YsaPur EsChomuw 06-05-2010 11:47 PM
Thanks! It's actually VERY good advice, as I was without a plan. There have always been occasional floods in Slovakia, but never on such a large scale. I really believed that sort of thing couldn't happen here... :o
The good news is, there's a period of three rainless days before us, during that time they will continually let water flow from the dam, so there'll be more space to receive the next batch.
Frieda 06-06-2010 05:00 AM
that's good news, i really hope it works!
here's what's in the official NL in-case-it-floods-emergency pack:
radio + extra batteries
hand winding flashlight
regular flashlight & extra batteries
1st aid kid (bandaids, gauze, scissors, bandages, desinfectant, etc)
matches (packed in water tight bag)
tealights
blanket
whistle
compass
pocket knife + some other smaller tools (screwdriver, hammer, small saw)
stash of all my meds
cash + copy of ID paper
map
phone nrs
desinfectant gel
water: 3 liters per person per day for 3 days
canned food + can opener for 3 days
toilet paper, soap, detergent, tampons, toothpaste, toothbrush
raincoat
emtpy jerrycan
clothes for 3 days
i really hope you'll never need it!!
Jack Flanders 06-06-2010 05:17 AM
^ Me too. Been through 3 floods and it's really bad. If you are told to leave - do it.
YsaPur EsChomuw 06-06-2010 06:30 AM
^&^^ :)
What's the empty jerry can for? A makeshift toilet?
I think I'll add the picture of the SHUT UP man to the list, in case I started to whinge...
Frieda 06-06-2010 10:14 AM
haha, no! it's to collect drinking water if you're handed some from a bigger tank. don't drink from where you do your toilet things-- which reminds me that there should also be norit and those tabs for purifying water in your first aid kit.
maybe you can print a rain poncho with a picture of the shutup man :D
Frieda 06-06-2010 10:20 AM
oh, and add mosquito repellent and sunscreen too.
lukkucairi 06-06-2010 10:29 AM
^^^ :( OK after reading all that, I will not whinge about our basement flooding yesterday :p
Ysa, good luck!
just read this - hope you are OK still
YsaPur EsChomuw 06-06-2010 11:55 AM
I feel a lot calmer and safer now. Also: many evacuated people could return to their homes today.
Sadly, not all homes remained homes. But the situation and the mood in the town is much-much more hopeful. Not a single raindrop today! :D
Thank you all.
Frieda 06-06-2010 05:01 PM
~~~~~~ i'll keep sending good vibes! ~~~~~~

and hugs, too. stay safe!

brightpearl 06-06-2010 10:27 PM

I'm so glad things are drying out, Y.
Frieda, you are a wealth of information. I had to google "jerrycan." :)

I would like to announce that my kid is unremittingly awesome.

xfox 06-06-2010 11:24 PM

Very happy to know Ysa avoided peril and sorry for those who didn't.

Oh! I hope it's not where you keep your twinkly lights stuff!

lukkucairi 06-08-2010 09:24 AM

^ nah, lights are all OK - it was a hard two days of work moving everything out of the basement though, and we lost all the carpeting and I might not be able to salvage the rugs. The couches are OK and I hope we can salvage the huge beanbag.

turns out we have a seam in our foundation that the guy who built the house never bothered to fix :confused: - it looks like it weeps water maybe once every 10 or 20 years or so? the house is 71 years old. we're gonna try to fix it now :o

lukkucairi 06-08-2010 09:25 AM

glad you're OK, Ysa!

Marcus Bales 06-09-2010 05:50 PM

New Dictionary Game word: Galliard

Odbe 06-09-2010 08:35 PM

Yesterday I handed in my last pile of uni-drawings for the semester :eek:
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT
They actually just let you go? A whole five weeks of no assignments? They're not going to pull me up and say "WAIT WAIT ACTUALLY TAKE THIS HUGE LIST OF WORK TO DO" ? I'm not going to get back on the first day and find out I was meant to do 30 oil paintings?

Finally! Time to get some drawing done!

Odbe 06-10-2010 02:54 AM

Announcement #2: I am excited about tomorrow. Tomorrow, I am making bacon cookies.
