Hagiography - a disused Islamic mapping system that failed due to a requriment that lattitudes and longitudes center on Meca, which made calibration with star movements a bit complicated at best. Developed in the 17th century by Islamic scholar and explorer Hagi Bin Lostin - Hagi was presumed lost at sea somewhere in the Pacific Ocean while attempting to map the European continent.

hagiography (n) - a method of prophecy, once popular in parts of Albania, which consisted of the dipping of an ugly old woman in black tar and chasing of her around the town square with brooms and rakes, the ensuing pattern on the cobblestones being interpreted by the local hagiographer, to determine whether or not there would be another six weeks of winter.

NOTE: not to be confused with fabiography, which denotes cheap romance novel writing.

hagiography n, the self-written, highly laudatory, life story of Alexander Haig.

hagiography- The sad tale and fate of beautiful women who enter hagdom after half a wonderful life.

This can be reversed if, just before slipping into eternal darkness, they find a fairy godmother who magically sparks life anew and grants some wishes.

<i>hagiography</i> (n) - the list of all the witches a wizard has slept with <i>"Harry Potter compiled himself quite a hagiography with that scar of his."</i>

Hagiography -- Images of structures that have been both Christian and Muslim places of worship; after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul (yes, Istanbul not Constantinople. Why did Constantinople get the works? That's nobody's business but the Turks').

we have a winnah....

Okay, guys....

My judging will be in no way as thorough and creative as the precvious judges. The reasons for this are many and dramatic, but we'll boil them down to this: I am on the road right now and using a very dicey dialup setup that cuts out on me frequently.

I will say that for sheer whimsical originality, I adore Smartypants' definition and declare it the winner. Since I have had occasion to travel to Salem, MA and see frost on the windowpane here this week, I think perhaps he had the sentimental advantage as well.

I'll give you a belated rundown of all the runners-up, etc., when I return home, since all the entries were delightful, and I am sorry not to do them all justice this fine morning, but -- anyway -- here's the true definition:

hag·i·og·ra·phy
NOUN:
pl. hag·i·og·ra·phies

1. Biography of saints.
2. A worshipful or idealizing biography.

Many thanks to you all; this is lots of fun!

What can I say? I'm speechless. (I just woke up actually, so my head is fuzzy.) With little fanfare, let us continue.

The Word of the Day is:

pillion

Pillion: (pill-Yun) Contraction of the words "pill" and "young"

The term for children born "accidentally" despite use of "The Pill".

Gatsby 03-24-2005 08:17 PM

Pillion (adverbial phrase): (pell-EE-on) Often used at raves and in mental institutions, pillion is a slang derivative of the phrase "pill you on."

Usage: "What kind of pillion, man?"

*********************************************

Edited: Dammit, I retract my entry. I didn't read everyone else's because I didn't want my brilliant interpretation to be influenced or risk being unfairly inspired by something someone else wrote, and I'll be damned if Craig Johnston didn't already think of it.

Next time I'll read before I hit the "post" button.
