Fraught with tension

¿? what do you think it's like being a crab..if you could go now (your mind) into a crab, what would you see, where would you be, what would you be doing, what would you be thinking, what would you think of all the other things a crab would see.. the squids you'd see.. what's it like, do you think, being a crab? |
I'm thinking: the water's temperature is rising unpleasantly. Yes, it's definitely getting hotter and hotter. And I'm swimming in circles... I can't get out of here! Help!
|
This is such an excellent question that I fear I'll never do it justice.
Well, I expect the crab has no idea it's a crab or that it lives in water, so I guess it wouldn't be thinking of that. Perhaps it would be thinking about how, even as it shreds and eats this lovely bit of decayed herring, it is hungry. It might spot a boy crab and fancy a bit of shell without understanding why. And it might be thinking of needing to find a place to hide, again for reasons it doesn't understand, except when it's actively being threatened. Pretty much like being a person, actually, with the possible exception that Froot Loops are harder to come by. |
Wow! a Froot Loop! (chomp) Whoooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaa! Augggh! I can't breathe!

scuttle.... scuttle..... scuttle.... ooh, meat detected. om-nom-nom-nom. scuttle.... scuttle.... squid! hide! be the sand... be the sand. raise one eye, raise other eye, coast is clear. scuttle scuttle scuttle...... ooh, meat detected. om-nom-nom-nom....

ok answers i suppose but i don't think anyone's really feeling it yet |
I see the tide is out and I crawl out of my hole in the sand. I know I have to be fast finding dinner before the tide comes back in. I watch for predators and hope today is another lucky day that I am not eaten while I feed..Tide's coming in..time to get back in my home and watch my favorite show, Deadliest Catch.

o good here comes terry
i bet he can think himself entirely into a crab's shoes and post a vivid account of the experience |
OH, all right then, as Tippy's left you bereft for the moment. With apologies to the original author for the minor adjustments, hahaha.
What the Crab Thinks I can't imagine how they all live up there. On land I mean. How could you ever sleep? Crushed by the weight of your bones and the whole of the heavens now I think on it. The body needs oxygen but good lord imagine being in a great dirty sea of it. You couldn't get clean after all things just floating around in the air chemicals and crap. There's no way you could avoid being coated in it no way to wash it off really. Must be cold. There are tigers up there you know. And bears. Something could just swoop down out of the sky on you come creeping out of the trees at you rip you to shreds. Could've been me. There but for the grace of god I guess. |

Well, I'll be damned.
![]() Google wanted to know if I meant "cream shoes." I thought it meant the dairy product rather than the color and was momentarily flummoxed. |

good work beryl - a keenly observed ditty that gave me an insight into the crab condition without even mentioning pincers |
