Newbies introduction

hi guys as I am sure you have noticed by now by the looks of the current events board you have a lot of new users here now. I found this board and saw that it looked like a really nice place to come. I was right. You all seem to be very nice and we just wanted to say Hi and thanks for welcoming us.

I started this thread so that we could introduce ourselves to you and get to know you guys better.

As you will see from our posts in Current Events we will argue on some subjects and at times the debates can get pretty heated and we might even stoop to calling each other names however when its all said and done we are a big family and love one another. Most of us have known one another for as much as 5 or 6 years now. We've become like family and are close. We may be a little dysfunctional :D but we are good people from all over the world.

I will start by introducing myself. I am Red2 I live in the US and I am here to discuss the events, chat, have a good time and get to know each of you lovely people. I hope that in time you will accept us all as part of your family as well.

Thanks for being patient with us.
Take Care all,
Red2

Hi

Thanx for enduring our invasion! ;)

My name's Stephi, from Germany (more precisely: a Lower Bavarian girl living in Berlin). Like to read & post current events or chat a bit while my computer just works for me. Don't like fixed categories and have a passion for long nested sentences and lots of (...) additions and smileys...

Damn curious to get to know you folks :) You don't bite, or? :D

nowhereman 05-04-2007 11:46 AM

Hello everyone

Thank you for opening your doors to many newcomers, myself included. While I am here, I look forward to spirited debate and not purposely disrespecting your home in the process as I get to know all of you. :)

brightpearl 05-04-2007 12:02 PM

I'm a relative newbie, too. Everyone seems bright and lovely, and nobody's bitten me yet. Perhaps I just don't hang around in the right threads.

I heard somebody got beard burn in the Friday pub thread last week.

which reminds me...

Red2 05-04-2007 12:04 PM

Happy birthday. :) BTW if you get lucky and stick around long enough you might just get that bite from someone. Never know. :D

brightpearl 05-04-2007 12:12 PM

OMG I don't want one!! Nobody PM me!!
:D :D

Red2 05-04-2007 12:14 PM

LOL. :D

Well hell, I'm leaving then.

But seriously, it's nice to be here. I'm looking forward to some stimulating conversation. And a bit of inane, pointless conversation, as well.

Thanks, everyone, for allowing a few escapees from the ICQ psyche ward to take refuge on your message board.

Veruki 05-04-2007 01:46 PM

Hi, everyone! I'm Veruki. I don't really consider myself a new (I've been lingering around here for a while) but I just recently registered so I guess that make me new. ;)

Anyways, I'm really sweet and will talk to anyone about anything so don't be shy!

zefrank 05-04-2007 01:49 PM

hello and welcome to the board. the recent influx of people has already been met with a few complaints from the existing community so i consider this to be a trial period for all of you that have recently joined.

i'm glad that you took the time to come to fast chat to introduce yourselves, it may seem like a slight formality, but without doing so it appears to be more of an invasion than it does an influx of new perspectives.

regarding new perspectives: i am not keen on the idea that you are already warning this crowd of bad tempers and "biting" before you have unpacked your boxes. if you want to stay you'll have to earn your keep, and that means being respectful of the people who have been here long before you.

this forum encourages different points of view but it is not a free-for-all free speech zone. for example equating carter with the nazis post after post is not the start of a discussion, but rather goading and bullying by using idiotic generalizations. if that sort of thing happens then banning will become commonplace.

i hope this forum can accommodate you guys, but i am leery of a crowd that is retreating from somewhere else.

It is your board and you can do as you wish. I came here on the premise that this board was filled with nice and open minded people. Do you have an FAQ that lays out what can and cannot be said on your board? Without it, people are kinda posting blind here and I don't want be walking on egg shells fearing that what I say just might offend someone. So I think it's only fair to lay out your ground rules for the new people.

I think that if we are respectful then all rules will fall in the their proper place.

i also think this is a place filled with open minded people, but i can't say the same about some of the folks that have recently been posting in curent events - and that is what led me to post.

as for rules, there are a few big ones:

no spam
no pornographic images
no images or comments that disparage people with disabilities
no threats of physical violence towards anyone.

beyond that, think of it as you would a dinner party - generally no rules are printed out, but it becomes apparent when things get out of hand. arguments are fine, but if a fight breaks out, or the converstaion turns to factional name calling - someone has to leave.

i agree. there is an obvious political tension between the existing folks and the new arrivals. not to descend into chaos in the current events forum will be the biggest challenge.

nowhereman 05-04-2007 02:13 PM

Fair enough

I can handle that. I just hope you deal with the individual misfits and not lump everyone new that just recently arrived as trouble makers. Yes, I can see where you are coming from though.

I almost never go in there, not even just to lurk. I still haven't recovered from the schism on the Show forum. :(

This has been a fun place for me so far, however, and I hope it continues to find its way relatively easily.

I think it's okay to be who you are, you know? But there's no reason for incivility. Let's go for Jon Stewart talking to John McCain rather than Tucker Carlson.

once again i have a slight problem with this. new arrivals are existing folks too, no? why do we always have to label people and establish some kind of crazy-arse "ranking"?

if people are complaining about new members flooding the board (which admittedly they are doing and, yes, they are getting on my nerves as well!), maybe the people that are already on this board are the ones that are creating a problem and not the new ones... i am glad to see a few new faces, even if they make me throw up my arms in despair sometimes. i prefer that to endlessly treading in the same old place.

Veruki 05-04-2007 02:27 PM

^Brightpearl I agree with you whole heartly. I wander in there once in a while, but the tension is thick. I my opinions are typically very strong, so I usually think better then to post something that might cause someone to lash out at me. I rather not say anything at all.

I see you banned the Duke. He is a nice respectable person among many people. He doesn't bully or attack people.

I don't think it's about ranking... I think it's more about more about attitude. When new people come in as if they know everything they tend to rub the older ones the wrong way. I think what Ze is trying to say is... please proceed with caution.

i don't care if someone's old or new.. old members with an attitude are just as annoying as new ones with an attitude.

i agree with this, and am willing to see what happens here. this forum however, has a context which is made up of the surrounding environment (my site) and its history (legacy membership), and when anything changes significantly i will weigh that change against that context.

this is not an empty snail shell to be crawled into.

those exist elsewhere: http://www.forumforfree.com/

the ban on Duke is not permanent, but rather a cooling-off period while we get this sorted. when and if he decides to come back he can continue to " shock... that's a promise ..." in a place that has "good internet coverage", and it will be judged on its own merits.

I'm sorry but if you want to keep the board bland so it's just a small group of people all with the same opinions and attitudes, then your board will be limited. Which is not a bad thing if that is what you are looking for in a message board. Some people like that. I think it's only fair to lay out the expectations you have of people when they come here if rules are going to be implemented. So far there is no FAQ laying this out. It's all subjective. People don't want to be walking around on egg shells fearing they may offend the senor people here. I know I don't.

Tunesmith 05-04-2007 02:57 PM

Maybe a subforum could be created for the influx of toasters from ICQ?

I think as long as they're willing to contribute to the board and follow the rules accordingly, there's no reason to deny them access to the wonderland that is the Zefrank Message Board ;)

New toasters, what were the rules like on ICQ?

subjective? of course it is. what do you think a group of people writing text to each other is? you think a rulebook will somehow alleviate your responsibility to learn to get along with people here?

ok.

the rulebook is bright green and gilded in gold. inside there is a single page. it reads : "don't be an asshole"

edited to add:

i forgot - on the back of that page it says (in italics): "unless you are funny"

One last thought...

I'm a new registered user, but I'm a long time vistor of the entire site (like 2 years). The truth is many people register, put their two cents in and never return. If you want to be a part of this, be meek about it. Be nice and you'll be welcomed with open arms... one day...maybe.:D

stop ranking.
you'll go blind!

The ZEFANK Natives

I'm known as the Tennessee Man and would like to thank all those that have welcomed the sudden influx of new users. We all plead guilty to being new here so, please do not hesitate to respectfully advise any one of us that might not be aware of the procedures or the workings of this board if or when we cross the line. As far as the newbie group goes, all are very good posters that enjoy debates. We give as well as we take so, to respect and understand or to defend our positions on the issues depends on how we're addressed. Kindness brings kindness. Hateful responses breed hateful replies. Any user that projects themselves to be stupid will be treated that way and we expect the same treatment. At times people will simply have to agree to disagree. Thats fine, no harm no foul. Each of us has the right to feel how we feel about any issue and express it here. Having other agree & support your postion is not a given. If your not willing to debate your position on an issue, don't post how you feel about it. This should apply to the newbies as well as the natives. This is a good board with many functions the newbies are just learning about. Mistakes, oh yes we'll make them, no doubt about that. Sorry I've been away most of the day but, Friday I do a little volunteer work for a non-profit organization and just got back. Another way of saying, NO PAY involved. I feel better because of it. The only person in this life we have to please, is ourselves but, getting along with the masses never hurts. Thanks to all the natives here for putting up with us while we learn. We are good people from all over this world that got to know one another via cyber space and we look forward to knowing each of you natives here as well. Yes, I tend to get long winded at times. Sorry!!!!!

Duke has been banned. Take a look at his posts. He didn't attack anyone here. Someone or some senior posters ganged up on him because they didn't like what he was posting. I won't speak for him but I'd be surprised if he returned if if they let him post again.

Not only that. Take a look at the Current Events forum. It appears they locked that out too. I can't post in there. Can you?

It would appear that this is their way of telling us to go away. Notice we aren't being welcomed with open arms. I believe their is a history here with some posters and posters that have returned to this board. A lot more behind the scenes than meets the eye.
