To be the first person to actually die laughing.

It's a new day - new question....

Snails, oysters or both?

I will not!

Tunesmith 11-13-2007 04:18 PM

Definitely oysters, because the idea of pulling escargot out of a shell sounds disgusting...i like my slimy molluscs de-shelled, thank you very much!

auntie aubrey 11-13-2007 04:33 PM

i've tried both and i found snails conceptually more difficult. in the battle of mind over matter, snails were much harder to defeat.

my answer is neither, but if i absolutely had to choose i'd choose oysters.

brightpearl 11-13-2007 05:13 PM

I am a veggie head and so don't eat either, but if I had to choose, I would choose oysters if I could have them this way, because it is so purdy.

madasacutsnake 11-13-2007 05:40 PM

Both! Snails in their shells with garlic butter and oysters with caviar, creme fraiche and vodka or in a shot glass with......dammit I can't remember but they were good.

lukkucairi 11-13-2007 08:44 PM

conch.

auntie aubrey 11-13-2007 09:16 PM

^ yes, in fritter form.

i basically have a policy about meat that says i can't eat anything that looks like it looked like when it was alive. no fish with the heads on, no snails still in the shells, no lobster.

it's not a moral thing. it's a grossout thing.

Anna 11-14-2007 01:04 AM

mmm... I think I'll skip the shells and have the

swordfish

trisherina 11-14-2007 01:39 AM

Oysters and snails are pretty much undifferentiated slime. For my money, oysters tend to go better with other sadistic foods I am fond of.

Oyster-wasabi shots with aquavit
Serves 6
Warning: Not for the faint-of-heart!

3 ounces aquavit
6 small fresh oysters such as Olympias, freshly shucked (or use pre-shucked Chesapeake or Pacific oysters)
3/4 teaspoon prepared wasabi paste, or to taste
1 1/2 teaspoons domestic or imported black caviar, or salmon roe caviar
3/4 teaspoon minced fresh cilantro
1 teaspoon orange zest

Place the aquavit in the freezer at least 2 hours before you plan to serve. Chill 6 shot glasses, preferably the straight-sided variety.
If using the very large, shucked Pacific oysters, cut them into halves or quarters. Working quickly, place 1 tablespoon of aquavit into each of the chilled glasses and top with 1/8 teaspoon of wasabi paste, or to taste. Top with an oyster, and top each oyster with 1/4 teaspoon caviar, and a tiny pinch of cilantro and orange zest. Serve immediately.
If it is possible to do so elegantly, drink the whole thing in one gulp.

madasacutsnake 11-14-2007 04:41 AM

Aquavit.

Weird - was trying to explain aquavit to a co-worker yesterday. What're the odds that it'd come up twice in twenty-four hours?
Especially considering I live in the US now & stopped drinking years ago!

Question for thurs the 15th...

On Tuesday, it was so warm that I waded into the river up to my knees. The frye nibbled at my toes, the water hyacinths were blooming, there were bees. I felt the impulse to jump in.

Did I do it?

Hyakujo's Fox 11-15-2007 08:33 AM

I say you were pushed.

Angry Kid Hoyt 11-15-2007 11:46 AM

Yes, with all my heart I hope you did.

lukkucairi 11-15-2007 12:04 PM

just like brave sir robin, you did it in your armour :)

auntie aubrey 11-15-2007 12:33 PM

^ luku, have i told you lately that i love you?

pearly: i'm going to say no. i'm going to guess that a moment before plunging in you were distracted by a strange "hoo-hooting" off in the distance and you galloped into the woods in the hopes of tracking down its source. you galloped for days but never found it.

wait... you are a horse, right?

brightpearl 11-15-2007 12:37 PM

This is fun. :D

Just to see how it affects your thinking, I'm going to specify that I was fully clothed and there were a few people about. Total strangers, all of them.

topcat 11-15-2007 12:49 PM

i think you did it.

Angry Kid Hoyt 11-15-2007 01:15 PM

Well, Ophelia did....
