pumpkin pie !

auntie aubrey 11-21-2007 05:01 PM

impossible to answer without more information about the occasion on which said pie will be consumed.

brightpearl 11-21-2007 05:36 PM

Ooops, I didn't even mean to make that the Q of the day, just commiserating with Jack.

As we covered early in my presence on this board, I really enjoy pie. Nearly any kind will do. My favorite, however, is the lemon custard pie my grandmother used to make. Pretty much just eggs, sweetened condensed milk, and a ton of lemon juice. Ahhh.

Oh, and buttermilk pie. I know it sounds nasty, but it's unbefreakinglievable.

That recipe only has the grated rind of one lemon. Is that the actual recipe you use or one you googled? Cos I'd like to try it.

brightpearl 11-22-2007 09:34 AM

^Aw, you're asking for my grandmother's recipe?
*sniff*
:o
Nothing would make her happier.

Buttermilk Pie

The one in the link is similar, but this is hers:
9 inch unbaked pie shell
1/2 c. (one stick) room temperature butter
2 c. granulated sugar
3 heaping T of white flour
3 eggs
1 c. buttermilk (don't use the powdered kind and water)
1 tsp. vanilla (sometimes she used 1/4 tsp. of lemon or almond extract, but I prefer lemon zest and/or slivered almonds on top myself.)
dash of nutmeg

Cream soft butter with sugar, add flour slowly, then eggs one at a time, and beat well. Stir in buttermilk, vanilla, and nutmeg. The filling will be very watery and will look curdled, but that's normal. Pour into pie shell (you'll be less likely to spill it if you put the shell on a cookie sheet, fill it, and put the whole lot in the oven), bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes, or until center is set. I often have to put foil around the edges of the crust partway through, or it'll burn, especially if the oven has hot spots. You'll need to let this one cool thoroughly before serving so that it will cut well. Whipped cream is nice, but not absolutely necessary. It's also a nice foil for fresh fruit.

¿ question of the day ? for monday, nov 26th:

imagine, if you will, that the total membership of this forum joins together to create a super-band. musicians, singers, performance artists, filmmakers, an artist collective in the fashion of gus gus, if you will. who is the singer? who plays tambourine? is there room for interpretive dance?

what is your role in this super-band?

brightpearl 11-26-2007 12:55 PM

I run the laser light show.

Normally I would say there is no room for interpretive dance, but this is an unusual group, and I can think of several people around here who would totally rock it.

auntie aubrey 11-26-2007 01:04 PM

you're in my head again. i was going to claim the light show. but i'll settle for being director of the children's choir.

i nominate trisherina for the role of costume design guru.

Frieda 11-26-2007 01:12 PM

hmm. nice question!

actor/director of a play or musical or something, or i'll be the standup-comedy act.

and i play some mean air guitar on my crutch!

i want to be in that choir. i've been told by my music teacher that i make a "really disharmonious, disruptive racket" :)

lukkucairi 11-26-2007 03:29 PM

set designer!

Angry Kid Hoyt 11-26-2007 04:31 PM

I'll walk around looking annoyed and carry a clipboard.

auntie aubrey 11-26-2007 05:04 PM

we seem to have all of the auxiliary roles covered. so far our only performer is β cyg, lone member of the children's choir.
