assumpsit - to ruminate on judging with a considerable effort to stretch time and patience, with the (preposterous) ulterior motive of never ever having to judge TDG again.

Assumpsit

Mesopotamian goddess of time and patience; said to have waited seven times seven ages for the return of her lover Sasu, who went to pick for her the farthest star of the firmament, being the only one able to tell Assumpsit about the time before time. The goddess is often depicted wearing said star in a diadem.

assumpsit - a cousin once-removed on one's father's side.

Pa: Yew cain't marry Clyde, Edna Mae -- he's yer assumpsit.

Ma: Marry who ye like, girl, Clyde ain't no relation ta yew.

URGENT!
Hyakujo's Fox has been reported missing from this site and his disappearance is causing considerable concern among those of us who have come to know and love him. It has been rumored that he was kidnapped by Somali pirates who await the payment of ransom. If anyone can confirm this account or has any other information as to his whereabouts, please notify us here at TDG promptly. This matter is very urgent.

lukkucairi 05-07-2009 11:08 AM

assumpsit:

a specialized maneuver used by Somali pirates when kidnapping Australian foxen.

assumpsit - an error in the plural.

The plural of fox is foxes, not foxen.

YsaPur EsChomuw 05-07-2009 12:23 PM

Maybe Fox got pox. Fox pox, or chicken. So he's lost his vox. Um... vox humana.

Marcus Bales 05-07-2009 12:45 PM

assumpsit - Pseudo-Seuss

Maybe Fox
Has got the pox
And Mrs Fox
Has changed the locks
And though our Fox
Is good at talks
When Mrs Fox
Heard what the docs
Said Mr Fox
Acquired, rocks
Were thrown at Fox
His shorts and sox
Were next. "De-tox!"
Cried Mrs Fox.
So Foxy gawks
And knocks and knocks
But Mrs Fox
Still has her vox
Unchanged. These shocks
Have left our Fox
Without a box
(Of either kind --
But never mind!)
And thus this lapse
Of his, perhaps.

assumpsit:

An extremely obscure science fiction reference, often mistaken for a typographical or grammatical error:

Quote:

"I know they ride to the hounds on Terra, back before Sanctity, before we left. That was in my history book, with pictures of the horses and dogs and the little furry thing - nothing like our fox at all. I couldn't figure out why they should have wanted to kill it, even. With our foxen, killing is the only thing to do."
perhaps our Fox ended up on Sanctity, hunted by Hippae...

assumpsit - hunted in fantastical ways

The Naked and the Nude
Robert Graves

For me, the naked and the nude
(By lexicographers construed
As synonyms that should express
The same deficiency of dress
Or shelter) stand as wide apart
As love from lies, or truth from art.

Lovers without reproach will gaze
On bodies naked and ablaze;
The Hippocratic eye will see
In nakedness, anatomy;
And naked shines the Goddess when
She mounts her lion among men.

The nude are bold, the nude are sly
To hold each treasonable eye.
While draping, by a showman's trick,
Their dishabille in rhetoric,
They grin a mock-religious grin
Of scorn at those of naked skin.

The naked, therefore, who compete
Against the nude may know defeat,
Yet when they both together tread
The briary pastures of the dead,
By Gorgons with long whips pursued,
How naked go the sometime nude!

Okay, thanks for your unprecedented patience - but there's too many to mention!

Oddly enough, Wikipedia provides the following information.

Quote:

Assumpsit ("he has undertaken," from Latin, assumere) is an action for the recovery of damages by reason of the breach or non-performance of a simple contract, either express or implied, and whether made orally or in writing.
and, fortunately for Dictionary Game judges,

Quote:

The Common Law Procedure Act 1852 abolished the common law forms of action in England and Wales.

Assumpsit as a form of action became obsolete in the United Kingdom after the passing of the Judicature Acts of 1873 and 1875.

In the United States, assumpsit, like the other forms of action, became obsolete in the federal courts after the adoption of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure in 1938.

ponask - a silver receptacle in which the ashes of the ancestors are kept.

Marcus Bales 05-09-2009 04:54 AM

ponask - Yiddish, a person in a state of mind of anticipatory disappointment; not a cynic, who might take some satisfaction in being right, but rather an attitude of long-suffering acceptance of the way things turn out not very well no matter what.

At first, YsaPur viewed her boyfriend's inability to satisfy her in bed as a challenge, but gradually over the years she came to regard sex with a ponask's resignation, and often fell asleep in the middle of the act.

YsaPur EsChomuw 05-09-2009 11:20 AM

ponask - a woollen sock worn exclusively to bed
