coloboma (n) Latin American dance that was ultimately forgotten rather than forbidden, in which each partner separately performs a loboma (see illustration below). In the early days of the dance, the partners stood about three feet apart, but during the 1950's, under the influence of the universally acknowledged master of the coloboma, Uruguayan Ernesto Pañuelo, partners progressively moved further and further apart, until eventually they would peform the dance in entirely different cities, up to three weeks apart. However the dance went into decline following the controverial Pan-American Championships staged in Buenos Aires in 1961, for which Ernesto Pañuelo has still not completed his performance. For many years he claimed he would complete his performance only when the time was right, however this prospect became increasing unlikely after Ernesto was hit by a bus and killed instantly near his home in Montevideo on the 14th April 1973 .
