I have seen movies, based on books, that are equally good as the story they are supposed to represent. Usually they are different adaptations on the same story, but equal in calibre.

One case in point, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

But you're right. I've never seen a movie BETTER than a book.

But then, I've never seen 2001. Should probably read it some time, too.

just remembered- rumor has it "Confederacy of Dunces" is being filmed now by decent director... or in post-production. Anyone heard about this?

it is?? it is?? omg that would be hilarious!

and about 2001, the book was written while the movie was being shot.. i guess that doesn't really count..

edited to add: imdb

The world acording to Garp was pretty good, also 2001.

I think the worst ever are the Steven King movies. Even though I watch them all...guilty pleasures....

True, it was still pretty good though. I guess I need to get the Confederacy of dunces book, I have never heard of it. It has some crappy reviews...still checking it out. Is this true? Have you read it?

Someone help me out here. This is one of the most agonizingly dull books I have ever read!

I started reading this on the recommendation of a friend of mine who spouted its genius and hilarity. Well, 216 pages in it had not elicited so much as a smirk from me. And an overabundance of knowledge seems to be passing for genius these days. There isn't a single interesting character or episode in the entire book. And Reilly is not fun or even funny. He is an obnoxious character who could only save the story by being horribly dismembered early in the story so as to save the reader any further exposure to his ilk.

This reads like Judy Bloom with reference encyclopedias. I finally decided not to finish the book when I realized it wasn't going to get any better. There is no reward in reading those pages.

I must be one of the dunces. Gimme Heller's "Catch 22" any day over this garbage. What's the deal with this book?

I will have to check it out....the message boards for that movie were pretty negative, but they were talking about two very good directors. They also speculate that it is going to be another 3 1/2 hour movie.

I am getting so sick of 3 1/2 hour movies, or even 2 hours for that matter.

Frankly, I see that as the funniest part of all- the fact that the main character is proposed to be this genius and yet the book reads like a "Judy Blume with encyclopedia references" (that's a pretty fair description there).

To me, that spells out our tendency to unquestionally exalt those who makes us feel like dunces to be geniuses. When in fact, he's just a big butthead that makes people feel stupid. The main character does it, and I feel the Toole is playing the same game with his readers.

I'm interested in how they are going to market this character to a mass audience.

that's exactly how i felt when i read the book. it's so clever! i'm a bit afraid that none of all this will be kept alive in the movie, i'm afraid that it will become a "theres something about mary"-movie or something.. you know, something that "everybody" can laugh about.

Mmmm... I really liked "Shawshank Redemption" - both the movie and the book. I don't know that the movie was *better*... must continue to think about this one!

Film >= book

There's one film that's at least equal, if not better than the book:
Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Oranje)
