Wow I haven't thought about Adrian Mole in about twenty years. I remember liking it because it was a male's point of view.
Haddon's second book A Spot of Bother is worth a read. Won't say it moved me but a couple of great passages and a quick read. I wrote this a few months ago when I first started reading it: Man, late 50's, about to have a break w/ reality. Looks like anxiety disorder d/t psychosocial stress. |

Memorial, Bruce Wagner, also his "Cellular Trilogy" - I'm Losing You, I'll Let You Go, & Still Holding. He writes a wicked Hollywood satire, but has this quality of sadness & empathy that is, well, moving. (I had a new & stranger than I would have reckoned experience with Memorial. I know someone in the book. Literally. He uses a real person as a minor character, by name, describes her just as she is, & I know her. Very odd.)
Patrick O'Brian - the Aubrey/Maturin novels. Jack in the pillory at the end of Reverse of the Medal... pages 4-5 of The Hundred Days... I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. London Fields, Martin Amis. Trainspotting, Irvine Welsh. Before picking up a copy of this book, make SURE it's one with a glossary in the back. Unless you're already a Scot. Also Marabou Stork Nightmares, which is a pretty harrowing book. I also find Terry Pratchett quite moving at times. That'll do, pig...

Still sad.
Don't get me wrong. It was a good ending. I see why the author ended it that way and how it fit the theme of the book, but yeah very sad. Last edited by DiggerDude : 04-29-2007 at 05:56 PM. |

i just finished the history of love, by nicole krauss. i was expecting good things, and to possibly be moved...lol. i was extremely disappointed, however. i am attending a lecture/discussion series on thursday evening, and really have nothing positive to contribute. it gets 4* on amazon. maybe its just me.
