Yard Work...

I have a double lot. We started raking and clearing flowerbeds and cutting down rogue branches. My dad and I counted the walnut trees in my yard. Officially there are 14 and they all need to be cut way the hell down. Not to mention all the friggin lilac bushes that are going to kill me come spring.

I had squirrls yelling at me all day because we were invading their territory. The mailman and one of our neighbors, Chuck, told us that no one had touched the yard in at least TWO YEARS. No wonder they were racing back and forth across the lawn. They were trying to protect their territory.

So far, we've cleaned up about a third of the yard and that was 6 hours of work. I pulled a muscle in my arm and nothing I've taken has done anything to quell the pain. At. All. I've been crying tears it hurts so bad.

And I have to start the process all over again tomorrow. Ugh.

Buy good gloves.

Buy good (read expensive) equipment - tree loppers, wheelbarrow, chainsaw, brush cutter, blower vac and a pair of those big plastic hands for picking up garden waste. The more money you spend on equipment the less muscles you will pull.

Buy ibuprofen.

OK Chill out!! What else are you doing? Do you know that walnut trees are worth - they are worth a lot of $$$$$$$ so don't be too fast to close a deal to have them sold. Don't sell them!!!!! Get a few quotes. And if they are healthy don't sell all at once.

if you cut back the lilac bushes, they won't bloom next year.

Hire somebody else to do it and give that pulled muscle a rest!

I don't do anything to the lilac bushes either. Feed 'em, maybe.

Put out some ears of dried corn for the squirrels - maybe they won't yell at you if their mouths are full .

Cut back almost to the ground a third of the lilac bush so you will get new growth next year and still have blooms. Next year do the same thing to another third or the shrub. The third year cut back the remaining third and you'll have a great looking plant. If you fertilize them, use a product with the middle number the highest like - 4-8-4. Good luck!

Becks,

Try your namesake, Bextra,if you can find it anywhere.

Otherwise, 2 Aleve followed by 2 extra strength or 8 hour tylenols an hour or two later. Layering the meds feels good. So do hot baths.

I agree with Brynn - a peace offering is in order. It's getting cold out there!

Day Two...

Got another third of my lawn finished. The squirrls were stalking us today. Sitting really close while scrapping walnuts with their teeth. What an awful noise. Before we even got out of the house, we could see about 3 or 4 of them looking for walnuts they had buried in the front yard. They were rabid.

Cleared out 2 more flowerbeds, the street side of the yard, and cleared the driveway of leaves. I feel awful for the yard waste guys, we have at least 30 bags of nasty years-old mulched-over leaves.

My wrist is know kaputz and my lower back has had it. One more day, but likely the worst of them all because now we have to clear out the damn beer garden. That place is what nightmares or harry potter movies are made of.

I'll get pictures if I ever finish out my current roll of black and white film. It's actually a pretty large yard (being on a corner and everything). I plan to have tiny concerts and watch black and white movies this summer. I'm trying to make nice with the neighbors so they won't be pissed off that I'm raising money to tear down some diseased trees, resod the lawn, and remodel my basement.

Good going! Only 1/3 to go. Get squirrel traps and transplant the buggers out of town where there's more space.

I had a neighbor who fed them (at our condo) and the squirrel population doubled in very short order. I'm not for encouraging wildlife in urban areas, unless it's a hawk.
