not listening to it at the moment... but "the fear" - Ian Brown - is bowling me over at the moment. Not sure if he's written it solo or not (I hope so - I remember seeing him at the Hac years ago - he's one of my idols) - but either way it's a brilliant track and if he DID write it he'd be a good candidate for our fiction section.

Razorlight - golden touch... oh yeah. The whole album is reminiscent of the Jam... except better. Live at Brixton academy - they Rocked The Big Time.

Thumbs up

Brian Protheroe!

A singular singer-songwriter, whose single single is his sole claim to fame, Mister Protheroe belongs in the pop pantheon next to Billy Joel, Elton John, Paul McCartney, and Cole Porter. Instead, he chose to tread the boards rather than pursue pop stardom, and apart from the mid-70's hit "Pinball" (recently named as a "guilty pleasure" in the British press), his remarkable oeuvre has been sadly overlooked.

Well thank heaven for a small but rabid cult of fans, and the internet. When small Eurolabel Basta Records dusted off his three Chrysalis LPs (Pinball, Pick-Up, and I/You) for release on compact disc, the fans went wild, and the result was a box set which added a fourth disc of unreleased material. What's even more exciting is that Protheroe, currently still thriving as an English stage performer, was drawn back to the studio, where he recorded two new songs, which Basta cleverly packaged with two Quicktime videos of those songs (directed by and featuring BP), and a second disc chockablock with more unreleased gems from the past three decades. It is this album, Citysong, to which I am presently bending a delirious yet attentive ear.

His work is difficult to pigeonhole, but it is literate, clever, and very melodic, displaying influences of almost every type of twentieth century popular music, from The Beatles and the Beach Boys to the sounds of Broadway, speakeasies, spy movies, and English music halls. Oh, yeah... when it's appropriate, it also rocks. I invite you to check this guy out. Follow this link: http://homepage.mac.com/dmax/bp.html for more info, including free downloads, and a link where you might order the aforementioned albums.

I have no vested interest beyond being one of the aforementioned rabid fans. I would very much like to right the wrongness of Brian Protheroe's obscurity. Please give a listen, and spread the joy.

Talking Heads - The Great Curve (from Remain In Light)

GEEminy! The sheer momentum of this number sweeps me away. The intertwined chants swirl around me, and I'm singing along, hopping from one thread to another, fixing to dance around the room... then, the break, and holy ba-LO-ley, Adrian Belew is just shredding his guitar.

Damn.

I almost wish I still smoked, 'cause I need me a cigarette after that.
