Jesus Land, a Memoir by Julia Scheeres

Amazing! It's been a while since I picked up a book and couldn't put it down. Jesus Landis the truly haunting memoir of a woman from Indiana who, when she was 16, was sent with her brother by their Calvinist parents to a Christian reform school in the Dominican Republic.

It's a harrowing story -- describing people who are not only enragingly ignorant and cruel, but heartbreakingly unloving of their children -- especially of the author's eternally optimistic brother who wants only to have the kind of "normal" home life he has seen depicted on TV. But the book isn't just an indictment of the family, community, and authorities who inflict such unbearable physical and emotional pain on the two main characters -- it's also a testament to the author and her brother's capacity to survive and maintain their love and faith in each other.

I was just blown away by it.

"I don't think God wants us to believe in him. If he wanted us to believe in him he'd do something about it -- like exist perhaps!" --Linda Smith
