started 'bad food britain' by joanna blythman yesterday. it's non-fiction, about the way that the british just don't appreciate food. she argues that we watch hours of celebrity chef cooking programmes, and buy loads of glossy cookery books, which we 'idly flick through whilst reheating our ready meal in the microwave'. she was a point i suppose, but it's a bit of a generalisation - i cook potato gratin from scratch, i'll have you know!

The English by Jeremy Paxman is an excellent, funny and satirical study on us Brits... I recommend it.

Modern Chess Openings

It's not exactly what I'd call a page-turner, but I've been trying to learn how to play online with all my tech boys in the office. It's more fun than I thought it would be.

life after god by douglas coupland. i'm enjoying it. but think it pretends to be more profound that it really is. nice pictures though! and perfect for reading on buses - each page consists of one or two paragraphs, seperated from each other
