Was a very good book. I am now reading You Shall Know Our Velocity by Eggers and although it is good, I must say AHWOSG was better.

I'm reading this now, on recommendation by a friend.
I'll admit that I picked it up and set it back down several times over the course of six months or so. But once I really set my mind to it, got past the appendices and indexes and tables of contents and prefaces and acknowledgements and apologies and graphs, I really got into it. Great writing. This is a picture of a stapler. Brilliant. |

Anyone in San Francisco should check out 826 Valencia, a pirate supply store, book store, and also free writing workshops for neighborhood kids. You can pick up a copy of DE's new book of short stories there, or one of the McSweeney's quarterly publications which are amazing.

AHWOSG is a brilliant book... and McSweeney's dot net is a blast!
...but, i hate to say that i've had some trouble with Egger's stuff since AHWOSG. You Shall Know Our Velocity seemed so labored and clumsy to me that after reading it, i just kinda stopped paying attention to Eggers' work (and in doing so, i completely missed his collection of stories How We Are Hungry - anyone read that?) i read some stellar reviews recently about his newest What is The What, but my first impression as i begin this book is dishearteningly similar to YSKOV. i really want to enjoy it, but so far it seems like Eggers' voice has lost the poignant honesty that so steeped the pages of AHWOSG. could it be possible that with AHWOSG Eggers exhausted his skill for candor and communication?; and, dare i suggest, perhaps his real talent lies not in writing the words, but in editing them?... -ct
