do you buy cds like in days of yore? or do you download from itunes or somewhere? we are thinking of releasing a cd, and really want to know if anyone still buys them. ![]()

I still buy them, I've never downloaded any music but I am ashamed to say that I do own copies from other people etc.
If people stop buying music the music industry will DIE and there won't be any music TO download. So buy... okay?! |

The man of Rat is a crazed audiophile, and we always buy. Often we'll download some tracks from an album beforehand to see if we like a well-reviewed artist much.

Maybe it goes back to growing up with LPs -- It was dismaying enough to see album art reduced down to a 5 x 5 inch square when CDs took over, but now even that's being done away with. (I also really like listening stations in music stores WAY better than the 20-30 secs of intro you get to each song online. I know when I want to buy something on the spot if I hear it in a store, but I've never bought anything I've just stumbled across on Amazon or the iTunes store.)

I still buy them too, & have never downloaded a song (of course, not knowing how to probably contributes to this...).
![]() A few months ago, I expressed interest in Korn's greatest hits cd to a friend. He offered to give me a copy (of a copy), & I turned him down. I just get a kick out of seeing the liner art, lyrics (when posted) and any assorted goodies that the artist & their label put into the cd package. :: shrugs :: I also grew up on albums & 45's, so the concept of cd's is still pretty cool to me. ![]()

I think you can not beat the pride of owning a CD of you favorite album with cover art. I still think that getting or giving free music is not as harmful to the artist as it seems. There is not a better way to get free marketing than getting a "sample" of the whole package to the consumer. Soon music will start to be put on 5.1 or 7.1 DVD music disc to try to aviod the pirating issue but that will not last long before someone figures a new way to copy it. The real ticket is in the music. If it is good, it will get around and the merchandice will sell to those who want it. Look at the Dead. Most of their money was made off merchandise and almost all the music that I have heard was "legally" copied at their concerts.
Metallica - pfft. They have decided to release a new CD with a few that have "golden tickets" in them. If you get one, you can go meet the band. I will be downloading this album. Fvcking Willy Wonka they are not. |

I will buy them if they are bands/artists where I know I will like most of the CD.
If I am only looking for one particular song from the summer of '88, there is no reason to look for a CD containing it.

btw i don't know if it's the same in the states,
but in europe the market for ringtones has apparently now exceeded the market for normal music. scary stuff! looks like there's still plenty of prospective cd buyers out there then ![]()

Nothing beats having the real thing so I buy. It just feels better if that makes sense. And if it's a fact that the ringtone market exceeds the music market I think I'll cry. That means people are listening to their phones more than music, how depressing.

I don't really buy "CD's" per se any more. I buy albums from iTunes and RealRhapsody. My computer is my main source of music so I just make sure I only get music in a legit way.
