Two great novels--one short, one long

For those with little time or short attention spans, I highly recommend Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman. Through a series of dreams about time, Alan Lightman creates 30 little fables where people see their lives differently, because time acts differently in each place. Alan Lightman teaches physics and writing at MIT.

For an epic book, I recommend the Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie. This is considered Rushdie's best book (I would agree). Midnight's children is the story of Saleem Sinai, a Hindu child raised by wealthy Muslims. He is born at the stroke of midnight on the day of India's Independence, and shares not only India's birthday, but also it's history, along with 1001 of the other "midnight's children". The book is both magical and tragic. Anyone who loved One Hundred Years of Solitude will love this.
