1. Clean the hell out of your house. That way you'll come into contact with everything you own. And start aggressively throwing stuff out, well ahead of time.

2. Realize that your life will be Hell for as long as you are in the old place. Setting up your new place is an adventure, but getting out of the old one ois a dreary, endless ordeal. So speed through Part One, getting out, and you can level off from there.

3. Make vicous, painful decisions to chuck big stuff- sames time, room and your back.

4. Ditch most of the medium-sized crap, too: most of it is either unnecessary or easily replaceable.

5. Don't bother throwing out small stuff- dump it in bags and go through them in the new place (see #2)

6. Doubly so for your papers: pack them away and DON'T look at them until you've moved across.

7. The trips across are a bigger pain than you'll anticipate. Get a cube van if you can, ideally a vehicle big enough to do it all in one run.

8. Get as many friends as you can beg, cajole or blackmail. Many hands make light work, so as valuable as a burly man is, 3 children can get more done. Don't be picky about help. Pay them off with pizza and beer.

9. Don't be a hero. Carrying 4 boxes at once instead of 2 will be faster, but if this is your first move, I'm guessing you've got a big-assed job ahead of you. Slow and steady wins the marathon.

10. Get a squeegee to clean the walls- saves a ton of time. If you can't buy any, borrow one from a gas station.

11. Above all, remind yourself that it will end, and just keep plugging.

All i can think of at the moment.

Throw away, throw away, throw away.

Take your time and use the thin saran-type stuff to keep drawers closed.

If you think it might break, it will, so use extra padding.

If you come across something that you haven't used in 2 years and its not sentimental, pitch it, Goodwill it or give it to a friend.

Pack things by room and label boxes carefully.

Seal boxes carefully.

Bribe friends with pizza and beer to help you.

Don't freak out after you get to your new home, thinking you have to get situated right away. I'm psycho and was able to get un packed in a matter of days. That was exactly one year ago yesterday and I still haven't recovered!

Where ya movin' to?

First, let me say I agree with all that's been said so far. I can only add, for ease and convenience (my mother was an Air Force Wife and I an Air Force Brat so we learned this the hard way and it works) color coding is more important as there are more hands to help you work.

1 - Color code the boxes to go into the rooms at the new house. Buy those little stickers at an office store or buy different color magic markers. Make a list of the colors and rooms: Red = my bedroom Blue = kitchen Green = dining room, and so on, whatever colors you like for whatever room you like. You'll need it to:

2 - Put a sticker or a paper marked with magic marker color on each door or doorway in the new place when you get there.

Red marked boxes go in the red room; blue in the blue. It sounds silly but believe me, you'll love it that your kitchen stuff is all in the kitchen, instead of partly in the bedroom, the living room, the basement, and the dining room wherever someone happened to put the box down.

Make sure to have a tool kit handy.

If you have to move heavy things like a washer/dryer/ fridge/ stove etc... Rent a pair of moving straps. costs about 10 bucks for a day and are worth every penny. They are heavy straps with pads to go around the soulders. two people use them, the straps go under the object to be moved, people cary on either side... it's the only way to go. saves fingers and backs.

Start gradually.Try moving one foot, or wiggling your toes for a bit. When you get used to it try raising an arm in the air.

You can do it !!!

If you have really big things (like a fridge) that you absolutely must take with you, PAY SOMEONE ELSE TO MOVE IT FOR YOU. I can't stress this enough.

Hope everything goes smoothly!
