On this Memorial Day- One Bullet Away

One Bullet Away The Making of a Marine Officer. by Nathaniel Fick

An honest portrayal of a young man, graduate of Dartmouth (majoring in the classics) endured the rigorous training as a Marine Corps Infinitry Officer, on his way to his first deployment when America was struck on Sept. 11, 2001. This turning point takes him to Afghanistan, and later, as Capitan of the First Reconnaissance Battalion in Iraq in March 2003.

Here's an excerpt from the jacket:
"His vast skill set puts him in front of the front lines, leading twenty-two Marines into the deadliest conflict since Vietnam. He vows he will bring them home safely, to do so he will need more than his top-flight education. He'll need luck and an increasingly clear vision of his superiors and the missions they assign him.Fick unveils the process that makes Marine officers such legendary leaders and shares his hard-won insights into the differences between the military ideals he learned and the military practice, which can mock those ideals." (My italics)

Not only is this an important account of the men and women who are currently serving as during our "War on Terror". But it's fascinating to read this lieutenant's version of the story behind the daily headlines- and to realize that he is more aware of the situation and the needs of the Iraqi people in the first weeks of our occupation of Iraq than any single politician to date. He didn't intend for this to be a political book (I've heard the author speak a few months ago), but one can't help but read between the lines.
